Common Foot Pain & Conditions We Treat

If you’re dealing with foot pain, whether it’s in your heel, arch, or the ball of your foot, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common reasons people come into our clinic, and often they’re just not sure what’s causing it or where to start.

At Kootenay Pedorthic Clinic, we see people every day here in Nelson, BC and the Kootenays who are dealing with anything from plantar fasciitis to Morton’s neuroma, or just general discomfort when walking or standing.

When Should You See a Pedorthist?

A lot of people wait longer than they need to. Usually, they’ve been dealing with something for months, sometimes years, before coming in.

You might benefit from seeing a Pedorthist if you’re noticing:

  • Heel pain, especially first thing in the morning

  • Burning or tingling in the front of your foot

  • Pain in your arch or through the ball of your foot

  • Tired, aching feet after a day of standing or working

  • Difficulty finding shoes that feel comfortable

Even if it seems minor, these are often early signs that something isn’t working quite right, and they’re some of the most common things we see and treat in the clinic, such as:

Plantar Fasciitis (Heel or Arch Pain)

This is probably the number one complaint we hear. It usually shows up as sharp pain in the heel, especially with your first few steps in the morning or after sitting. It can ease as you move around, but often comes back after long periods on your feet.

Morton’s Neuroma (Forefoot Pain)

People often describe this as feeling like there’s a pebble in their shoe, or a burning or tingling sensation between the toes. It tends to get worse in tighter footwear or after being on your feet for longer periods.

Metatarsalgia (Ball of Foot Pain)

This is pain through the ball of the foot, often from too much pressure being placed in that area. It can feel sore, almost bruised, especially when walking or standing for long stretches.

Flat Feet or High Arches

Some people have very little arch, while others have quite high arches. Both can lead to discomfort if the foot isn’t being properly supported. Over time, this can affect not just your feet, but also your knees and hips.

Achilles Tendon Pain

Tightness or soreness in the back of the ankle is something we see a lot, especially in people who are active or on their feet all day. It can feel stiff first thing in the morning or after activity.

Bunions & Toe Issues

Bunions, hammer toes, claw toes, and other changes in toe shape can make shoes uncomfortable and lead to rubbing or pressure points. Over time, they can become more painful if not managed properly.

Arthritis & Joint Pain

Stiff, sore joints in the feet can really impact how you move day to day. This can show up as aching, reduced flexibility, or discomfort that worsens with activity.

Diabetic Foot Concerns

For those managing diabetes, protecting the feet is extremely important. Even small pressure areas can become bigger issues if they are not properly supported and monitored.

From there, we may recommend:

  • Custom orthotics built specifically for your feet and your needs

  • Footwear that actually supports how you move

  • Small adjustments to shoes or insoles to reduce pressure and irritation

  • Simple stretching or movement strategies to help muscles stay comfortable long term
