Frequently Asked Questions
-
A Canadian Certified Pedorthist is a healthcare professional trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and the biomechanics of gait. We specialize in the design, fit, and modification of custom orthotics, orthopedic footwear, and braces to support foot and lower extremity health.
-
Custom-made orthotics are clinical-grade insoles designed to be inserted into your footwear to manage various foot and lower limb conditions. An orthotic is specifically designed around you—aiming to better support, align, and accommodate your foot structures and your unique needs. When paired with appropriate footwear, custom orthotics can be highly effective to alleviate discomfort of the lower limbs and improve function.
-
A pedorthic assessment begins with a detailed health history to identify patterns and causes of discomfort. We then evaluate lower limb health through a range of motion testing, gait analysis, weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing orthopedic testing, and a review of your frequently worn footwear. At the end of the assessment, we summarize our findings and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
-
By using custom orthotics, bracing, and appropriate footwear, pedorthists help support foot and lower limb health—especially for individuals with chronic or medically related foot conditions.
People typically visit a pedorthist for:
Lower limb pain during everyday activities
Poor arch support or structural foot issues
Footwear modifications following surgery or injury
Diabetic foot care and ulcer prevention
Support for arthritis or age-related mobility changes
Athletic overuse injuries and performance support
Preventative care for high-risk feet & limbs
Common Conditions Treated:
Achilles Tendinopathies
Arthritis (Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Bunions (Hallux Abducto-valgus)
Diabetic Foot Complications
Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
Claw & Hammer Toes
High Arches (Pes Cavus)
Metatarsalgia / Morton’s Neuroma
Plantar Fasciitis
Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction
Shin Splints
If you’re experiencing discomfort, struggling with footwear, or managing a foot or lower limb condition, a pedorthist can help you find relief and move with confidence.
-
No, you don’t need specialized or larger footwear to accommodate our orthotics. We design your orthotics to work with your favourite shoes and boots whenever possible — providing proper support and comfort without compromising the fit of your shoes.
We can create custom orthotics to fit a wide range of footwear, including athletic shoes, dress shoes, work boots, sandals, and therapeutic or diabetic shoes.
-
We are committed to manufacturing our products using traditional physical casting techniques. Unlike capturing images of your feet with a smartphone or tablet camera, we prefer using plaster slipper casts to produce a more precise, detailed, and physical 3-dimensional representation of your feet to create your custom orthotic.
-
Custom orthotics take approximately 3 weeks to manufacture after your initial assessment. Once they are ready, we will always contact you to schedule a fitting appointment.
-
Please bring 2–3 pairs of your most frequently worn shoes, any current insoles or items such as toe spacers, and any medical referral you may have received (if applicable).
-
No, a referral is not required to see us! However, some extended health care plans may require one for coverage of custom orthotics or bracing. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm their requirements.
-
Yes, we offer a range of over-the-counter devices and insoles. Pedorthic clinics typically provide more supportive products than what you see at the drug store. Our over-the-counter products are convenient and cost-effective, making them helpful in addressing minor foot and lower limb issues. They can serve as a “first step” to assess how your body reacts to more supportive insoles or devices in alleviating foot or leg discomfort.
-
We operate on a user reimbursement system, meaning you pay upfront and submit your receipt for reimbursement through your insurance provider. However, we offer direct billing for the following organizations:
Canadian Armed Forces
RCMP
Veterans Affairs
ICBC
WorkSafeBC (WCB)
First Nations Health Authority
Individuals on Disability or Ministry Assistance with the province
